Hi all

I didn't like to leap in and appear 'stupid enough' but...

...I've been publishing information about the whole open data 'movement' in Briefing Bradford over the last couple of years and thought you might be interesting in a few of the items that we've included. It would be great if we could replicate the Leeds Data Thing in Bradford - I think there may be some interest from within the local voluntary and community sector as well as in health and the local authority.

Find out about Open Data…

…the move by local and central government to put all of the
information that they store about us, finances, projects, services… online. The
opening up of data in this way offers great opportunities for voluntary orgs,
which as a sector we're only just starting to explore.

Encouraging community use of public data
A new project, Making a Difference with Data, has its website
at http://www.madwdata.org.uk. It aims
to spread understanding about open data and transparency in local public
services, 'de-specialise' the area and encourage public use of the ever-increasing
amount of public information which is being made available. There are links to
existing data and examples, and hopefully practical resources soon.

Government “app store”
With 'Open data’ no longer an optional extra, the Government
Digital Service will create an official 'app store' at:

OPEN DATA
Requesting Government Data: The next step in open use of
government data is a form on data.gov.uk to enable anyone who has an idea for a
dataset which is not yet accessible to make a request and indicate the benefits
of releasing the data. Possible options given on the form for use of data are
community work or research, as well as business or personal use. Open Data User
Group's latest article at http://data.gov.uk/blog/odugs‐call‐for‐open‐data‐requests,
form at
http://data.gov.uk/node/add/data‐request.

Elsewhere, VCS Open aims to provide a directory of VCS Open
Data across the web with a showcase of opened data – data which has been hacked
or analysed to yield exciting results. The blog includes a report on Lasa’s recent
open data event. http://vcsopen.wordpress.com/.

We’ve also carried numerous articles about the Bradford

and the Maps & Stats site:

Thanks to everyone at Bradlug who has helped promote FOSS in our newsletter - and thanks also for your generous and supportive approach to the new 'free' meeting room arrangement and your very welcome donations. We are about to be hit with a third consecutive year of cuts (each year around 7-10% gross) so every little definitely helps.

All the best
