Using the lsusb i see the following:

Bus 003 Device 007: ID 148f:2770 Ralink Technology, Corp.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

As Wayne has mentioned using the following dmesg | grep usb > /home/paddy/usb.txt gives me the following:

[ 22.111175] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs
[ 22.111203] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub
Hi All

Not sure if I have asked this question at the right place or not but here
goes.

I have recently bought a wireless adaptor for my desktop and as I am such a
newbie, I am struggling to install it. Coming from a windows background, I
would just insert the CD and let the auto run take care of it. However
in Linux this of course won't happen.

I have tried Googling, but maybe because of the words I am using all I seem
to ever get back is advice on installing Linux from CD, not a device (and
its drivers)

Can anyone give me some simple tips on how to do this.

The device in question can be got to from the below link and is supported
on Linux.

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/6107087/-/Product.html?searchstring=Edimax+EW-7717UN+Wireless+N+USB+Network+Adaptor&searchsource=0

This is actually something simple that might be worth noting down for the
next meeting, as after all, any newbies like myself coming from windows will
struggle to do this. Maybe worth while adding it the Wiki.

Anyway, thanks all

Paddy
Hi All
To add to the earlier email, i am using Ubuntu 8.04.

I have plugged the device into my USB port, and nothing has popped up etc
which would make me think that it has been detected.

So far i have tried running files directly from the install CD, but nothing
happens. I think i am still applying the windows approach, i.e. open the
folder and double click the autorun.exe., .inf .whatever else i see :)

I was actually hoping that it would appear on my desktop with a 'new
hardware has been found' etc. but alas nothing.

All my Google attempts at an answer keeps bringing me back with results on
how to install Linux, not a device.

Thanks all

Hi Paddy,

When you connect it via USB do you get anything at all?

Have you tried looking to see if it is connected via dmesg? If
you don't know how to do this, drop to the terminal (gnome-terminal,
xterm, eterm etc) and do something like

dmesg | grep usb

Have a look through that and see if it's showing in the list. It
might also help if you could post that to the list as a attachment.

dmesg | grep usb > /home/YOUR_USER_NAME/usb.txt

Will do the trick, of course if you run the command from your home dir
omit the path and just pipe it to a file.
The rt2x00 drivers have been in-kernel since 2.6.24, but the USB id may
be new and/or Ubuntu may not have enabled them until later than 8.04.
The obvious advice is to upgrade to 8.10, particularly as there's a
comment on the play.com forum that it 'just works' in the 'latest'
Ubuntu (why are these damn lusers never *specific*?). But the advice to
upgrade will probably go down like a bucket of cold sick on this mailing
list. Oh well.
Hi Paddy.

Wayne's response is quite 'techy'. It's good, but if you're not sure
about using the terminal, it can be quite daunting.

If you're up for learning a bit of terminal usage, then great get in
there, - it's not necessary, but sometimes it can be really useful.

Another place to look is under the System - Administration - Network
section.

That shows your network devices and the USB wifi thingy might just be
there.

If not, a reboot with the device attached might just bring it up.

If not, then someone running a dmesg would be useful!

If you are on the internet via a wired connection then someone could
even connect remotely to you and help you sort it out...

One thing from your other post...
.exe files won't execute on Linux, cos they're programs for Windows
machines. As this is one way virus are spread this is a very good thing!
With devices like this they are little programs that install the drivers
for the device - Ubuntu and Linux have their own versions of many
drivers already built in or easily available (sometimes they don't!). I
suspect Ubuntu already has the driver - we just need to get it and the
device together.

Cheers
