Also the new HUD doesn't really appeal to me. However, have you seen Mint's Cinnamon desktop? From what I understand they are actively making it available for other distros. Positive remarks, re Cinnmon, have been made on various Linux podcasts. For me the menu is too much like Windows and I really don't want reminding of the bad old days. Afaik Ubuntu may also ship with the 'Mate' desktop which is a fork of Gnome 2, I might go for this. There are quite a few YouTube videos demonstrating Cinnamon.
