I've replied off-list, but I'd also like to follow up on John's email.<div><br></div><div>Web design is an exciting place to be right now if you're doing it well. There's not just HTML5 and new mobile devices, but javascript is starting to really mature as a language with the addition of unit-testing frameworks, MVC libraries, and decent loaders.</div>
<div><br></div><div>I worry just how fast the schools, colleges and universities can keep up with the rapid development in this field. When I was working with Secondary level ICT teachers a year or so ago, they seemed very restricted in the software they were allowed to teach - Dreamweaver for web design, Microsoft Access for databases, Publisher for DTP.</div>
<div><br></div><div>And the process of going straight into building something in Dreamweaver with no HTML knowledge is far from how real websites are actually created. For the vast majority of projects we work on there'll be a graphic designer, a front-end developer and a back-end developer. There may also be instructional designers, video production teams, flash developers and javascript developers brought in for some projects.</div>
<div><br></div><div>As for shops not using HTML5, there are generally two reasons for this. The first being a lack of time/inclination to develop new skills, the second being the restrictions of the frameworks/CMS systems being used. A lot of CMS systems are only now starting to give good HTML5 support, let alone defaulting to it. Not that I'm excusing either of these reasons of course.</div>
