Dear Paul,

MANY, MANY thanks for your kind offer. I had an e-mail from Steve
Lilley this afternoon and dropped in on him as he was leaving
work. He was BRILLIANT and very kind and saw through my problem
quite quickly. In my BIOS there was a setting that went for quick
booting and so skipped the options for USB booting. I hadn't seen
that. Once that was disabled it did pick up my USB DVD drive and
my problem was solved! I came home and just loaded Mint in and
cleaned Windoz off the netbook completely.

In fact I'm writing this from my Samsung netbook now, having
installed Mint 15 Mate. I appreciate what you have just written
about Mint 16 but I'm just so glad to be able to use this little
netbook anyway.

Thank you both for your kind concern which has been amazing. I
hope to see you folks sometime after we're back from the USA.

Best wishes - God bless,

Nic
As for Mint 14 / 15 I'm not upgrading to Mint 15. It's based on
the latest Ubuntu, which is supported for 9 months as opposed to
the previous norm of 18, meaning it expires before the previous
version. The knock-on for us Mint users is that Mint 14 will
outlast 15. I'll probably wait until 16 before I upgrade again.
If you can get to Ellesmere Port at some point, I can see if
it's possible to install to your machine, and even do the job
for you.
