Like Mike says, the Google / Office 365 services are just so easy to use. For my own servers I've used a variety of systems over the years including a good old Sendmail server. A few years back I looked at all the 'Exchange alternatives' available as I'd rather not have to build it all myself, especially the Activesync (push email) services. After trying out quite a few, I ended up with Axigen. It is a commercial product, but it catered for my main needs of IMAP and push email.
