Probably depends on the field -- certainly in some places, like learning
the Piano or a sport say, having a guru around can provide superb help.  
And as long as he/she isn't elitist and intolerant of newcomers, a guru in
the computing world can give much great assistance too (I've learnt a lot
from talking to or being in the presence of long-time experienced users).
