Ah righty, I get what you mean now. The panel tends to be crammed with
other things like the taskbar, icons etc. and they usually have their own
context menus, so a blank space is needed.

Bizarre -- not even a Trashcan icon on the desktop? Double-clicking that
should bring up Nautilus. Or the System Settings or Preferences things on
the menu should do the same thing. I'm stumped!
