We really need people who know computers, and won't go "Argh! I don't
know how to use this!" when presented with something that isn't
Windows/Office. We have several desktops running Vector Linux, and we'll
take along several Knoppix live CDs. The desktops will be booted into
IceWM, because we're going to leave them with a desktop loaded with
IceWM (largely because it looks a lot like Windows, and it runs happily
on slower/older hardware)

We will be doing four practical tasks, to help them get their stage 3
computing badge [1]:

1. Use a piece of presentation software (e.g. Powerpoint) to give a
presentation to an audience.
2. Devise a simple database that could be used by their Section for a
particular purpose, e.g. camp records, general records.
3. Produce a simple spreadsheet to record subscriptions and expenses.
4. Send & receive e-mail

We need someone to supervise each task. Schwuk is handling the e-mail,
Jen & I can take any two of the other three, and we need at least one
more person to take the fourth.

For the presentation, we'll be using KPresenter or OOo Impress. We'll
probably give them a clipart CD to use for the pictures. As long as they
can produce a presentation with a few slides, that should be fine.

For the spreadsheet, we'll probably use OOo Calc or Gnumeric. Again,
we'll only want a few rows of data, just enough to show that they
understand the concepts.

We're still not sure about the database. We could really do with a
simple flat-file database program like the MS Works database. Any
suggestions?

Russ
