Filled in the form on the lug.org.uk site. Nothing back yet.
Have been on #linux on irc.lug.org.uk but mostly seems to be op's idling.
Will try later if I don't hear anything back I'll be hassling people via
email.

Saltoun Arms no longer use their backroom, I got the impression that its
sort of a storeroom/dust gathering area.

And I've heard some really not so good reports from a variety of people
about the East Neuk backroom...

I'll check into a few other possibilities and report back!

Regards,
Mark.

Hi Mark, people,
As I mentioned a little while ago, I've just sent out a mail
shot to most of the people who've described themselves as being in the
Aberdeen/ Grampian area at the Linux Counter
(http://counter.li.org/bycountry/GB%3A%3Aaberdeen.html). Mark found it;
I'm just embarrassed that I didn't remember it myself. Some of the
mails have come back dead already, but I did a fair bit of hunting
around in the meantime and a lot of the people are still active on the
net. So, with any luck we'll see a good number more people coming in to
the list soon.
The back side of this is that since mails have already been
sent, there's no need to do it yourselves, unless you already know the
people yourselves. I could see it getting on people wicks to get a
sudden flood of mails in consequence of a old listing here.
Mark's server should be getting a workout soon <G>.

Ah Ha!, the first of the people responding from the listings on
the Linux Counter.
That, if I remember last night's web surfing correctly is Gavin
Henry, who does some fairly hardware related stuff and is selling a
book on DSP use on eBay.
I'll take the appearance on the mailing list as an indication of
interest.

Yes indeed. But know one seems to be buying that dam book!!!

Let me know when the "gatherings" start.

I think a bit of background info is needed. I'm 24 and a graduate engineer
working for invsat limited in westhill.
www.invsat.com

I will be doing my RHCE next year and I'm currently working on my CCNA, then
moving onto CCNP etc.

Look forward to chatting again,

Gavin.

I'm another of Aidan's catches from the Linux Counter and I thought I'd
say hello.

Brief bio:
  37 years old
currently unemployed (used to do desktop support/programming)
  been using Linux since '94

Is Aberdeen Linux User Group the official name? Surely we can do better.
What about
"Linux In North East Scotland" - LINES
"Granite city Open Source Software Interest Posse" - GOSSIP
"Aberdeen Righteous Software Enthusiasts" - er, perhaps not.

Hello All,

I'm a new recruit from the Moray LUG but contacted via the Linux Counter=20
Project - which I'd forgotten all about!

I'm 57 and my day job is in photography. I've used Linux for just over tw=
o=20
years but have tinkered with computers for over 22 years.

My problem - especially over the winter - is that I'm a bit far away. See=
 if=20
you can guess where I live :-).

RHCE? Is that something like Red Hat Certified Engineer?

If so, I think you just volunteered for something... ;-)

Mark.

First (techie) post! :-D

Well, anyways... has anybody ever played with OpenMosix
(www.openmosix.org)?

I'm a whisker away from jumping feet first and compiling kernels for all
my boxen that run it, and want to know if it has any really bad points to
be wary of.

Regards,
Mark.

Hello,

Just to thank Aidan Karley for inviting me to join the list. I
unfortunately only live in aberdeen for some of the year as im studying
down in sheffield at the moment. Also at the last minute I decided to
study finance and business rather than computing which for the last few
years I think I've regreted. Anyway I've dabled in linux a little bit
over the years. I can't believe the counter says I started in 97 that's
5 years. Nyways my I've worked my way through:

Slackware
Red Hat
Suse
Mandrake

And have dabled with:

CAJUN (Car Audio Jukebox UNix - (IIRC) neat mp3 player software with LCD
screen output)
ADSL
Various bits of linux software (apache, cups, etc.)

I feel its good for aberdeen to eventually have it's own LUG. I will try
and contribute in anyways possible.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Michael,
I see that your email addy is different to the one I pilfered from the Net. What does the "ERG" stand for? Have you been shifted sideways from the ENGineering department /per se/ into something more sexy sounding? What uses do you put Linux to in your project (Research Group?)?

This had been mentioned previously. After contacting the managers of
the mailing lists for MorayLUG and DundeeLUG, I think Mark has set them up to
receive daily digests of the traffic on this group. Hopefully this will all
help with getting the groups to the necessary critical mass.
Considering that I've been typing emails up for the last half hour and
still have a half dozen to go, I think that this is looking good!

There was another person I picked out of the aether, but after I
dispatched an email I realised that they were based in Tain, so there are
people I mistargetted further from Aberdeen than the North Coast.

Does this guy ring any bells?

You're still a student, and there's interest in the student CS corps in forming a LUG? Well, no need to go around re-inventing the wheel or reduplicating effort. I know there is some interest in the RGU student body too, but their heads haven't risen from their bar tables yet. (I know - unwarranted stereotyping. Except I was at Aberdeen from '83 to '87 and I still have the occasional beer in the Dungeon <G>. And the RGU bar too. And at their mean position.)

Well, we'll help you to cure that deficit. Meanwhile, I must take soldering iron and screwdriver to my new box too.
