Do you know if the mdeia is ok? Doesn't sound it. Do you have broadband (ADSL), or cable?? If so you can do a http or ftp install.

Download their boot.iso cd and do a network install from:

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/README.FTP for info.

For mirrors:

http://www.suse.co.uk/uk/private/download/ftp/int_mirrors.html

For a good mirror use below, or try a UK first, but they are quite busy soometimes.

ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/suse/i386/8.1/boot/

Stick that in your browser and follow the instructions above.

You need to burn the iso to CD, but you know that.

Can't see why it would take so long.
Where did you get the media from? Is it a Download? If so, did you check
the md5sum's?

> Am i doing anything wrong, how can i install from a network???
You'll need to little clarify that a bit...
Over a network from another *nix box on a LAN? (ftp/http/nfs)
Over the internet (ftp/http)

Mark.

Ah, Minix. Never played with it myself - I took Tanenbaum's book out to the rig with me a few years ago (as a variant on sleeping pills <G>) and was getting fairly interested. When I got back from the rig the police had changed my locks and the burglars had sold my computers. Never did manage to find the disc again.

Errr, that'll be Peet McKimmie (who IIRC was up to his eyeballs in Amspags for years too). I don't have an email address for him, though I have had several over the years (he changes addresses like more normal people change socks). I've BCC:'d one of his addresses, but next time I see him in the Northern Bar I'll try to get one of his real ones.

Hopefully some of my mates should be joining soon as well (new converts.)

Hi everyone, I am just about to get a new cpu and mobo - since most OSs will
have a bit of a nervous breakdown changing these, I am going to download and
install the newest version.
Can everyone put their oars in and tell me what they use and why? I am
currently thinking between RH8 and suse8.1, and possibly mandrake. Also,
has anybody got any experience with solaris8.4 intel?
Cheers
Allan

How long... erm.. depends on when you count the start date, when we met in
the pub last weekend, or when we had a few informal emails flying about?
;-)

Sounds good :-) I think they take the listings from Lug.org.uk and
apparently it can take a week to get listed and all sorted out on there.

Mark.

I changed from an PII/450 to an Athlon and had no problems booting my
system on my new mobo using Debian. It's my experience that most distro's
won't have a problem :-)

I did of course recompile my kernel with optimisations for Athlons instead
of Pentiums "just because"

Ah, you should come along to the meeting next month!
We're planning to start out with a bit of Distro Warfare :-)
I'm taking the Debian corner. We're looking for a few good men (or women)
to take the various corners.

Wanted:
Red Hat
United Linux
Probably someone for Mandrake, save me an' Aidan splitting it
Lindows (anyone actually played with it?) or any other distro that
pretends to be Windows.

Check the archive
(http://www.arricc.net/pipermail/lug/2002-November/000014.html) for more
info :-)

Regards,
Mark.

Hey Allan

I personally like Abit Motherboard as I have never had a problem with them.
And they tend be not too expensive. Then of course an athlon. (need I say
why). :).

For distro I use Gentoo but then thats cause I'm strange. But it is a
fantastic distro. Though you do need some knowledge and bandwidth as all the
source is download from the net. Before that I used Mandrake for an few
years. Its a good distro for new users and desktop machines. No idea about
redhat and the only version that I have used is 5.1 (and that sucked). Not to
keen on suse, I just don't like the way they do things. So anyway there is my
oar stuck in. Hope you enjoyed it. :)

If anyone is running seti@home I have a team called alug if they want to join.
Yep I was planning on start a lug, but it seems I was beaten to it. Which is
proably a good thing as I am inherently lazy. :)
