Errr.. generally speaking you don't need any for SMTP, unless theres
some kind of SMTP Auth going on... is this the case for you?

But in any case... seeing as your sending mail through sendmail on your
machine, then you have effectively already be authorised to send mail.

mail (the client) will just call the sendmail binary. And sendmail will
do the rest. It doesn't need to do any STMP Auth with any other servers.

SMTP Auth would be used between you and your ISP to make sure YOU are
authorised to send mail through them.

Though I'm not sure what happens when using a smart host in sendmail and
your ISP uses AMTP Auth... Without using the smart host, sendmail will
try and deliver the mail straight to the recipients mail server.

This is a handy thing for if you have a laptop and are moving between
ISP's, instead of keep changing your smtp settings, just use sendmail on
your box.

Chances are with the sendmail changes from the other mail... things will
just work.
