I'm trying to send out through my own hosting server, which runs 
some nifty management software that keeps on top of the email 
quite nicely. In fact, at the moment, the only email it handles 
is mine. Anyway, it (the smtp server daemon) does require 
password authentication to accept mail for relaying. However, 
because my XP box at home is polling the server for email every 5 
minutes, and my Linux box is connected through the XP box, the 
mail from the Linux box is now being accepted for delivery (back 
to the XP box - this is all a bit circular) because it's coming 
from the already-authenticated IP address. 

Mark - excellent link, many thanks, looks easy enough. I'm slowly 
getting there on reducing my dependency on this XP machine!
