Hi Chris, try rzip download from synaptic.
rzip uses a history buffer of up to
900MB, while gzip uses 32KB

Subject: [dundee] Creating compressed archives?

Hiya, this is something I've never been able to fathom. I know it must be possible, but how's it done? All my attempts to create a compressed archive end with a reduction by about 0.8Mb instead of anything significant.

What tools/formats are most practical?

Thanks,
  chris
