Boys and Girls,

Following Arrons second
flash talk on the OLPC fund there has been a lot of interest in the
OLPC project.

I would like to make a
proposal.

On behalf of the
society, a donation will be made to OLPC. This will either be a
direct donation to the charity for the full amount of $200 or
(and this is where help from you comes in. Yes, you!) that $200
dollars will go half way to purchacing us or very own OLPC. The G1G1
scheme (Give one Get one) costs $399, and I propose we enter the G1G1 scheme.

[For
those of you not familiar with the G1G1 scheme see: http://www.laptopgiving.org/en/index.php. In brief it is an
opportunity for people of the western world to get an OLPC machine by
donating one to a child and receiving one of their own.]

To enable us to buy a
laptop we would like to raise the total amount of $199.50 between our
members. (Thats the $399 for the G1G1 scheme, minus the $200 donation
the society will make.) Which in GBP is £97.57.

I personally will
contribute £20.57. Leaving the total amount to be raised:
£77.00.

There will also be issues of postage costs. I have offered for the laptop to be forwarded to us from a family member I have in the states. Postage costs will be minimal. Furthermore, the laptop will not be sent until the early months of 2008 (according to the G1G1 T&Cs.) Therefor postage costs should be taken into consideration and will be budgeted for in 2008. This sounds an awful lot like "lets just buy the thing and worry about how it gets here later". In essence.. thats a little true. ;). I am willing to make a further donation to postage costs next year and would like to hear if other members would too.

This can only be made
possible if there is enough interest from society members such as
yourself.

It is the intention of
the society that the laptop be made available to all members who
contribute to this fund. It can be used for presentations & projects and played
with providing no damage will be caused by said playing! The laptop
shall remain the property of the abertay linux society as an entity
and will not belong to any one individual member of the group. We all
know how to share nice :)! - This will be discussed at length if this proposal goes ahead.

The G1G1 scheme
officially ends on the 31/12/2007. All decisions on this matter must
be made before Friday 29th December 2007.

Now, ..hit reply and tell me what you think.
