last two years have seen unprecedented growth in the web 2.0 domain of
"social networking" sites or SNSs - encompassing ubiquitous names
such as Facebook, Bebo, MySpace, Live Journal and Club Penguin. Such sites are
not only popular with users, but attractive to entrepreneurs, both for
potential advertising revenue but also as an easy way of collecting valuable
personal data. The downside of social networking for
users accordingly is the potential privacy risks of disclosure: are
SNSs truly a "voyeur's charter"? The media already abounds with
stories of Facebook being used by police and other authorities to scan for
crimes; of employers and universities using SNSs to filter out aspiring
employees and students; of ID theft and financial fraud using data gleaned from
public user profiles; and of stalking by inter alia ex-partners, strangers
and commercial and political rivals. This presentation will explore
whether and how far the law may protect users who in ignorance or innocence
disclose more than they should online, especially the young and vulnerable; and
asks if we are really seeing a shift in values from privacy to disclosure.</span></font></p>

visiting scholar and invited lecturer to universities in the USA, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Latin America. She co-edited
