Basically when you DD the card the kernel doesn't know about the updated
partition table, it stores the old one in the memory.  One way of getting
around it is to pop the card out (although I'd suggest running the sync
command first to make sure the card has finished writing, it could have
cached some of the write and not completed) or use partprobe
(http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/re-read-the-partition-table-without-rebooting-linux-system.html)
which should notify the kernel of the changes.
