I'm like you, been listening to the silence for a while.
I agree more activity would be good, I used to work in Glasgow and go to Scotlug meetings, but am now in West Lothian.
Don't think I'm in a position to help much, being very much a 'newbie' myself, but am willing to swap experience etc.
Also keen to learn, particularly about networking with other computers ...
Currently use SuSE on a standalone machine, but no internet access due to its location - that's why I need the network!
Anybody else 'listening' to LUG Falkirk?

Regards
Rob

Subject: [Falkirk] Hello Falkirk

Hi there,
I hope someones reading this - I've been on the mailing list for a year or so
and I've only ever seen one or two (I think) emails circulated.
Anyway, assuming someone IS out there, I'll get down to it.

I run the (very small) computing section at Ottakar's Bookshop on the High
Street in Falkirk. I've been a linux user for a couple of years now, and have
always tried to push linux within the section. I've written a couple of
"shelf talker" reviews for a couple of titles and (as they're signed by me),
got to know a few regular linux-using customers.

I had a phone call from a bloke asking me to trouble shoot a dual-boot
ubuntu / windows xp situation.

Anyway, this email is not so much about this specific problem (I THINK i
sorted him out, although I'm no guru, and I've never even tried a dual boot
installation), but this guy asked what other support there was for a guy in
his situation. Of course, I told him about all the usual (googling, paying
for the distros support, etc etc. And I told him about this mailing list.

I'm going to put up a poster in the shop for linux newbies, offering to help
installations, troubleshooting etc. (maybe even hand out installation cds?)
Can I count on you guys to help out if needs be? - as I said, i'm no expert.
Maybe we could even try and get a regular meeting up and running (I know, one
thing at a time...)

So, what thoughts from anyone?

yours trying to spread the word!

Neil Paterson.
