It's probably because something else is already using the audio device.
(A common problem in Linux, unfortunately.)

Check if you've got a GNOME/KDE audio server running, i.e. do a 'ps x'
and look for esd, polypaudio or artsd.

If you find one, try killing it and see if that fixes the problem.
