[Gllug] Reply-to header munging.

Hi,

So far in the short time I've been on this mailing list, I've seen vacation
scripts going crazy and spamming the list, and I've also seen several
mistakenly sent messages including someones CV and more recently one with a
potentially offensive (to some but not many I guess) subject heading. The
other thing that happens occasionaly on this list also is duplicate
postings, because someone actually does the "right" thing and does a
Reply-to-all.

If you haven't already seen it, a good read on why this is all happening is
here:-

http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

In particular, I find the headings "Principle of Least Surprise" and
"Principle of Least Damage" to be relevant.

Naturally I'm very aware of the main argument in favour of header munging,
that being, to keep list traffic high and to avoid a sudden spate of
off-list activity, however I would have thought most Linux people were a bit
more intelligent and interested in adhering to reasonable mail software use
than worrying about people who haven't learnt yet how to use the "Reply to
All" feature on their mail clients.

Anyway, even if it did cut list traffic a little, I thought people were
complaining about too much traffic also recently :)

I would assume that this argument has already been had some time ago, but I
wasn't around on this list then and there's no mention of it in the policy
or web site.

Jake.
