As I understand it, they CDs are pressed with deliberate CRC errors
encoded into them. CD-ROM drives tend to enforce the error correction
more strictly (in hardware, I believe), and refuse to read what seems
to be a corrupt track, where audio CD players tend to skip the track
in question (which the record companies are claiming isn't audible to
the human ear).
