This is the reason I *always* run IMAP - if my email account is POP3, I
run fetchmail+Cryus (no need for an MTA, they both speak LMTP).

I tried the following recipe, which seemed to do no damage, and leave me
with a working local Inbox (which I don't use, of course, since I only
use IMAP, but the Ximian Welcome mail is kept):

1) Shutdown Evolution thoroughly. This sometimes means killing any
process which happens to still mention evolution in the name.

2) cd ~/evolution/local/

3) cp -pRv Inbox Inbox-copy

4) vi Inbox-copy/folder-metadata.xml

5) :%s/Inbox folder/Copy of Inbox folder/

6) :wq

7) rm -f Inbox/mbox*

8) Restart Evolution.

Steps (5) and (6) are vi commands, just type them as is. (Or cut and
paste into an xterm).

You might want to backup your ~/evolution/ tree first, and step (8)
tells you helpfully that "on this first time", etc, but it's just
recreating the deleted Inbox, your contacts and other settings will be
unaffected. Or, more accurately, were for me.

Good luck.

Dave.
