Hi Harry,

You can have a look at the framebuffer facility if you are determined to
do your things in console. I prefer it to the lilo=ask thing simply
because I find the fonts prettier/more readable, YMMV. That said, I
hardly ever use console any more. 

I tend to run X, but use a quite minimalist window manager (blackbox is
my choice; again YMMV) and just use aterms. On my particular setup an
aterm that takes up 50% of the screen pops up if I press Alt-F2, and it
gets maximised vertically by pressing Alt-v (the key bindings are fully
and easily customisable of course), thus I can fit two aterms side by
side with full height of the screen by just pressing Alt-F2 Alt-v Alt-F2
Alt-v or four aterms that take up a fourth of the screen each by
pressing Alt-F2 four times.
