Dunno, what and where is I2C?

Read them.  In the course of trying to get the speedtouch working (this 
option is recommended in it) I am compiling a kernel and this is where I 
seem to be encountering the latest problem.  The drivers themselves seem 
to compile fine, is it just I am getting a timeout message in 
/var/log/messages relating to usb something or other...
