[Gllug] MySQL 3.23.41 on RH7.2 - SOLVED

My thanks to Martyn and Simon,

It was a permission problem.

The mysql.sock file and mysql directories under /var/lib were correct but
the files under the /var/lib/mysql/mysql directory were owned by root. This
was changed to owned by mysql and the safe_mysqld script worked.

Once again the learned gentlemen from GLLUG save the day.

The permissions for mysql.sock should be fine cos it's a UNIX domain
socket created by the mysql server itself.
