Dear Hari,

According to the ps documentation, state D is

 D   uninterruptible sleep (usually IO)

The proc documentation implies this is usually disk IO, but
I'm not 100% sure of that.  The /proc/xxx/fd directory
contains information about the files used by process xxx, so
you may learn something there.  Personally, I haven't done
much digging around this.
