Further to this make sure that your backup is readable on someone elses tape
drive and not just your tapedrive. I have seen a DLT drive that read and wrote
tapes fine, just that nobody elses DLT would read the tapes this drive wrote.

It was some version of a head fault, or course this would not be a problem
until either the drive broke forever or the building burnt down.
