its a good job because boeing dont make engines :-)

also, they do use different engines in the same aircraft, TriStar is a good
example, also sometimes carriers request RR engines instead of GE, 

BTW, many fly-by-wire implementations are not digital, the systems used in the
harrier dont work when the last lot of power fails but then again by the 
time that happens you will be floating along under some silk.
