I recommend 3 major tools, which can help

1. Knoppix, download from www.knoppix.org, this is especially useful in 
detecting X configuration.

2. Belarc a WIndows audit tool, downloadable from www.belarc.com

3. Aida32 an even better Windows tool, downloadable from www.aida32.hu

I believe its possible to get the last 2 to run from dos bootable 
floppy. I've just discovered AIDA32 and its pretty awesome. And they're 
all freeware! :-)
