To get into your system, try booting with the command-line option
"init=/bin/bash" - it'll boot the kernel and drop you straight into a root
shell.  Depending on your setup, you may need to mount other partitions
(this will only mount the root partition) and so on before being able to
mess around...

I don't use GRUB, so I don't know exactly how to do this - I know how to do
it with LILO :-)
