[Gllug] USB Keychain - repair corruption?

I have been given a dead USB Keychain (AVB Mobile Drive 256MB) by a
friend who said "It doesn't work, but maybe you can fix it with your
Linux stuff." ( Challenging tone of voice omitted for clarity)

After trying to mount it on my Debian system, I get messages to the
effect of...

"Oct 29 11:03:49 jupiter kernel: unable to read partition table
Oct 29 11:03:49 jupiter kernel: I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0"

I have attempted to reformat the device using both mkdosfs which replies...

"unable to allocate space for FAT image in memory"

...and also attempted it with mke2fs which replied...

"No such device or address while trying to determine filesystem size."

... to which I thought fdisk-ing it would do the trick, but I get...

"Unable to read /dev/sda"

I am able to mount a similar USB Keychain on the machine with success.

Anyone have any advice or ideas?

Cheers
