There was a good article by Bruce Sterling in Saturday's
Daily Telegraph.

Good article, but I think this paragraph overstates the case:

"If Microsoft and its Windows operating system is somehow replaced in
the future – by free, open-source software, for instance – then
everything created by, through and for Microsoft's systems will be as
dead as the archaic computers of the old Soviet Union."
