This is something that most certainly can be done and I believe WebDAV 
is the way to go.  I understand that MS Sharepoint does this, as do a 
number of other proprietary content management systems.  You might be 
able to glean some details of _how_ they achieve this by looking at 
their knowledge bases and reading between the lines.
