Simon wrote concerning his dead system with the red LED still showing on the
motherboard.

The LED alight means that the ATX power supply as still supplying is 'standby'
current to the motherboard.  It will not supply the full juice until it gets a
'signal' form the motherboard, generated when the power-on switch is depressed
(which simply shorts a couple of pins on the motherboard).

Possible faults:

ATX power supply up the creek and not responding to the motherboard 'start'
signal

Motherboard up the creek and not generating the necessary 'start' signal


You could try disconnecting the power supply rom the mains, leaving it for a
bit and reconnecting.

My guess is that the ATX power supply may have failed - they seem to be the
weak leak in systems generally.

I can lend you a spare ATX supply to connect up, if you wish, to see if that
is the problem.
