If the machine is running BSD 3.2 then why are you asking on a Linux 
user list? :)

If you're running mysql 3 then you can't reliably back it up without 
shutting the daemon down.  If you're running mysql 4 then you may be 
able to, depends on your setup.  The MySQL documentation gives lots of 
tips for backing up databases, start there.
