[Gllug] Installing Debian Sarge on a brand new SATA-based machine

I've been awarded a new PC at school (after our support person tried to
do some serious work with my old one) - 3.2 GHz dual-core Pentium-mumble
with 1G of RAM and an 80G SATA HD.

It seems such a shame to run just XP on this so I asked for permission
from our IT people to dual boot it with Linux, and to my amazement they
said yes. They've installed XP in just half of the disc and left the
other half for me, and given me access to the BIOS so I can boot an
installation CD.

But...

So far I'm unable to run the Sarge installer because the SATA disc isn't
recognised by Sarge's 2.6 kernel.

Anyone know how I could bootstrap Sarge with a newer kernel which might
recognise my SATA HD?

TIA,
John
