I can't really answer your questions as I haven't been involved in J2ME
for about 5 years, but you might want to have a look at www.yospace.com.
They produce a J2ME emulator which emulates various handsets and
includes all the idosyncracies which each phone has, i.e. it even
emulates the failings in the implementation of J2ME which most handsets
have. They might also be able and willing to answer your questions as
they're a nice bunch.
