My experience is similar to yours (though slightly different in that I
burned diesel).  

For six of the last ten years, I've worked on contracts outside London
(Kent, Berkshire, Kent again and then Cambridgeshire), whilst living in
Muswell Hill, and found that I could get to each of these areas more
quickly than I could get to my current job in central London!  

My current job demands that I mostly use public transport, which -
despite the claims of the Mayors - is stupidly slow.  The plans for the
Olympic debacle are going to reduce London's road capacity even further,
probably to the point that I'll be looking for jobs outside the M25
again!
