[Gllug] Why Can't disk fail messages be more obvious

Hi all,

I started getting error messages as below

and the system was hanging

So I went out and got a new disk - have reinstalled and restored & took
the opportunity to upgrade to Debian ;-)

But I don't really understand these errors, I just figure disk failure
is bad (I ignored errors I didn't understand once - never again) so I
replace any disk that shows errors.

Is there a reason that disk errors aren't more categorical?

Is there a handy disk health monitoring program that I can run
periodically? Should I run badblocks from a weekly cron?

The machine is a laptop subject to frequent transport - used for
development - generally left on overnight.
