[Gllug] Modelines ignored on new GFX card :-(

I just got a shiny new Nvidia graphics card to replace my onboard intel
one. The onboard has never fun very fast and going from Ubuntu Hardy to
Jackalope with the new X made things even worse and thus prompted the
upgrade.

My monitor (DGM LCD) has never been detected through my KVM switch, not
even incorrectly and my native res (1280x1024) has never been listed in
gnome's display manager. It lists 1152x864 and 1360x768 but nothing
inbetween. The only way I am able (now Was able!) to get into native res
was to insert a custom modeline in to xorg.conf, this also happily fixed
a probelm I'd had with my screen being off centre relative to the others
machines attached to my KVM.

So this afternoon I put in the new card and the good news is it works
great - my compiz windows are flapping and fluttering effortlessly round
my desktop cube and I don't feel like I'm running a 386 anymore! Sadly
though it's not going into my native resolution. The Nvidia applet
doesn't list my resolution or detect my monitor which is no great
surprise as the Gnome one never did in the first place so I figured I'd
simply reset x and then add the modeline that had been working so well
for this monitor thus far. I did...
/
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

then added...

Modeline "1280x1024" 109.62 1280 1327 1472 1682 1024 1024 1023 1063

And restarted... nada.

Any idea how I can force the graphics card to start kicking out
1280x1024 before the blurry edges give me a migraine?

Cheers,

Roger.
