[Gllug] OT: old router as switch or buy dedicated switch

I've just replaced my old Netgear RP114 4-port router with a better 3-NIC Alix/m0n0wall model and I'm now using the Netgear as a switch by connecting the Alix LAN port to one of the 4 LAN ports on the Netgear. My question is whether this in any way degrades connectivity compared with a standard SOHO unmanaged switch? If so, any recommendations for such a switch?
