Rather, look at OpenAFS, its currently used descendent:

http://www.openafs.org/

It is used by many universities, including my last grad school, with Kerberos
for authentication. You can't beat it when it comes to distributed
file systems:
makes NFS/NIS suck by comparison. Moreover, you can mount directories
across OSs.
