I am not sure what you mean by this - but I have all the setting set to
the defaults and auto and I am not overclocking the system (which is an
option).

I have found that by following the instructions here -
http://technowizah.com/2007/01/debian-how-to-cpu-frequency-management.html

I can apparently set the CPUs to "powersave" - though I have to use the
Gnome applet to set each core separately and if I pick the other options
- eg "Ondemand" the choioce is simply ignored
