[Gllug] Is linux a good bet for HTPC

Hi there,

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 box, fairly standard install, with XBMC (www.xbmc.org)
as my media manager. It's plugged into my LCD TV using a standard VGA
cable, so I can't vouch for 1080p (although I've not heard of any issues
with this, if your graphics card supports 1080p I would think that with the
appropriate driver you'll get that res out of it). I have an IR remote, as
well as a Wii Remote to manipulate the menus, and I have to say this is a
splendid set-up. XBMC support for live TV is still in beta, but if the
standard of the rest of their offering is anything to go by, once it's ready
for full release it will be excellent.

I've always used nVidia cards (and currently use a cheap 512MB 8600GT)
because they have generally better driver support (although still
binaries). I have used ATI cards on Linux without problems, but I recommend
you check other forums for information on linux driver feature support.

Toodle-pip,

Alex
