without a dust-free lab for splicing platters?<br></blockquote><div><br>Have you had a look at the SMART information for the disk? e.g. <a href="http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/Smartmontools">http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/Smartmontools</a> . If that looks ok it would suggest that the filesystem is corrupt. If it doesn't look healthy you might still be able use dd to clone the disk and then try to repair the filesystem on the copy (I don't know if there are linux tools for hfsplus though). Taking care to keep the disk cool might give you some extra time while doing that.</div>
