There are two major UK exhibitions aimed at the teaching profession, the
Education Show at the Birmingham NEC and BETT in London. I have visited
almost every BETT show and seen the emphasis move from Acorn to Microsoft PC
plus a few Mac based stands. Most of the software is now web based, so
system independant, but there is hardly any mention of FOSS.
I can not relate the impression I received from chatting to other
visitors to the teaching profession in general, but I have been surprised at
the general lack of knowledge about FOSS, and many had not even heard of
Linux. Some of the larger stands were able to point to someone who knew
something about it, and there were a few stands that actually used it, but
they were in a very small minority.
The next BETT show is scheduled for January 30 to February 2 at the Excel
centre in docklands. Would anyone be willing to help run a stand if we can
arrange funding?
