It sounds to me like you've unwittingly dragged the terminal window to the left or right hand side of the screen where modern desktops instigate an auto-position feature which snaps the window to the left or right hand half of the screen. This allows you to look at two windows side by side easily. To get it back to where you started you have to drag the window away from the edge by it's title bar and it should snap back to the original size and position.

Subject: [GLLUG] GNOME Terminal becoming semi-maximised
I'm sure I experienced this before, but I am currently using Debian wheezy with GNOME 3.

Sometimes, I am either typing or performing a mouse operation when the Terminal window suddenly takes up half the screen. That is, full vertical and half horizontal. The Resize option on the Control menu is greyed out. I can Maximise to go full screen but Unmaximise only gets me back to the same state.

How, from this odd situation, do I return to normal operation?
