Hello,
In answer to the question about disabling kdm/gdm/xdm in Debian,
the best way of doing this that I've found is this:

Run this as root (depending on your window manager(s) of choice).

update-rc.d -f kdm remove
update-rc.d -f gdm remove
update-rc.d -f xdm remove

This removes the links between the run level scripts and the init scripts.
It's not bad.

X can still be started using the tried and trusted:

/usr/X11R6/bin/startx

Redhat and Suse both use different methods, but Debian starts X in every
run level beyond single user (and 0 and 6!).

Hope this helps,

Thanks,

Tim
