Google just announced that Picasa is available on Linux. It's linked from

http://labs.google.com/

but the page is down for now. I know it's not open source, but they say
that the development has benefited WINE and this may make it easier to
move people to Linux. I know the GIMP is powerful, but Picasa makes
photo editing very simple. I'll be having a look when I get a chance.

While you are at the Labs page, check out Google Trends. A cool way to
see how search habits change with time. You can even compare different
search terms, e.g.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=linux%2C+windows

Other coolness is an open source short film at

http://orange.blender.org

Nice 3d work using Blender. I can't say I totally followed the plot and
it didn't play totally smoothly using vlc on my box, possibly due to
lack of CPU muscle, but it looks great.

I see the IRC channel has been busy lately, partly due to a log of
visitors from Cambridge LUG.

By the next meeting I am hoping to have upgraded to the latest Ubuntu
(Dapper Drake 6.06). If this works out I may bring my PC along to show
it off.
