I may have found the answer at www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/

The Sound Blaster Audigy SE
Chipset    CA0106
Driver & Docs    Details ca 0106

gives the information;

Digital/Analogue input does not work yet. Needs more development work.

It looks like the solution is to change to another sound card, but
what??
unless you have another suggestion?
